Grandma Tibbitts' Apple Squares
Ingredients

eggs
1 3/4
cups
sugar

cups
sifted flour

cinnamon

baking powder

salt

oil
1
tsp
vanilla

cups
thinly sliced apples
3/4
cup
chopped walnuts
optional
Old-Fashioned Sauce
1
cup
sugar
2
T
cornstarch
1/2
tsp
salt
2
cups
cold water
1/4
tsp
nutmeg
2
T
butter or margarine
1
tsp
lemon or vanilla extract
Instructions
Beat eggs and add sugar gradually.
Beat until mixture is light and fluffy.
Add sifted dry ingredients.
Stir in oil and vanilla, blending well.
Fold in apple slices and nuts.
Turn into greased 9×13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 mins.
Cut into squares to serve. These freeze well.
Also good served warm with ice cream, whipped topping, or Old-Fashioned Sauce.
Old-Fashioned Sauce
Mix sugar and cornstarch with salt in a saucepan.
Stir until cornstarch is blended.
Add cold water gradually.
Stir well.
Place on stove and bring to a boil, stirring constantly until thickened.
Add nutmeg, butter and flavoring.
Serve warm.
